How do you deal with misunderstandings?
You talk about them, of course...
Express yourself.
Misunderstandings can cause a lot of damage and ultimately ruin a relationship if not handled correctly. It's important that whoever you're in conflict with understands your position, but they only can comprehend it if you convey it properly to them. This is you articulating exactly how you feel/think and the message you are trying to get across. Then the receiver of the intended message needs to ask questions to gain a better understanding of the situation if they do not understand something, and then a dialogue can ensue. A misunderstanding is defined as a failure to understand something correctly. And a problem with communication is the illusion that it has taken place.
Need help with a misunderstanding?
If a misunderstanding happens (and they often do), here are 5 steps to handle it. 1. Ask for permission to discuss the situation. 2. Ask questions and really listen to the answer. 3. Find the source of the misunderstanding and correct it. 4. Check that understanding has been reached and the emotions dealt with. 5. Confirm that this understanding is now in place and move forward.
If you or someone you know needs help with unraveling a situation that may have resulted in a misunderstanding, please consider scheduling a session with me.
